Users Stopping Slimming Medications Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying these drugs should be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced something flipping and you become ravenous," described an individual.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
