Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was far from happy this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had let in ten goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Had their campaign coming unstitched, or had there never been a thread keeping it intact to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, before he to later acknowledge that the management had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were facing for fiscal problems. Reports that he could resign were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Roman club became as messy on the pitch as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, it has been hard to ascertain if they are improving or imploding.

Matteo's Unexpected Comeback

A single player continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this year. He spent last season with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, Lazio were attempting to stay there a while longer. The registration embargo forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster without replacements.

He joined in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, the vast majority of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His Best Role

Perhaps the manager was still trying to determine the exact type of his skill set. Originally described as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
